Water Is Best!

Most of us have had that sweet, flavorful drink known as soda at least once in our lives, if not more. Soda is internationally known as a tasty beverage, it seems as though soda is the beverage choice with every meal; lunch, dinner and sometimes even breakfast. Although this beverage is tasty and refreshing, it is not a healthy choice. Soda has many negative impacts on the body, including the amount of strong acid that it contains and the damage that it causes on the body, and as martial artists and athletes here in Duluth Georgia, we need to put the best fuel we can into these amazing machines we use so hard.

Soda contains several ingredients that is potentially harmful to our bodies. Such as phosphoric acid, high fructose corn syrup, artificial color and caffeine. The phosphoric acid gives soda that tangy taste, but it is also used to slow the growth process of mold. In addition, it is also used to remove build up dirt from tiles and sulfation from car batteries. An ingredient that can be used to remove dirt and sulfation from a car battery does not sound like something that we should put in our bodies.
It seems as though high fructose corn syrup is in everything that we eat and drink today. Many food companies use high fructose corn syrup because it is the most inexpensive sweetener to use. High fructose corn syrup comes from genetically modified corn (GM food is the combination of a specific trait in an organism and then genetically engineered into another organism, causing a change in the genetic structure). For example, they may take an arctic fishes’ dna trait that can survive in cold weather climates and then fuse it with a tomato, therefore, causing the tomato to also survive in cold weather climates without freezing. Some of the harmful side effects of high fructose corn syrup include kidney stones, obesity, diabetes and many more.
Artificial colors is used in thousands of our foods and drinks. The dye is used to improve taste and the appearance of our soda. According to Dr. Mercola, the common side effects of artificial coloring causes hyperactivity, and other behavioral effects in children.
Last but not least caffeine is the mighty and most used natural drug (not man made) that is found in plants, seeds, vegetables and some fruits. Caffeine isn’t as bad as some may think depending on how much or how little your body can take. Caffeine has health benefits such as, protecting us from cancer, to name a few oral cancer and throat cancer. On the down side, it can cause upset stomach, Sleep disorders, Panic attacks, Irregular heartbeat, Difficulty concentrating and more.
Water is always your best choice, especially when your working out.  But don’t get down just yet, you can still enjoy your sports drink or your favorite pineapple soda in moderations. Along with daily exercising , healthy drinking and eating habits. Remember one step at a time. Hard to do, but not impossible!

Keep moving forward!
